Ultimately from the root *demh₂- (“to domesticate, tame”).\n* De Vaan suggests that the term derives from Proto-Italic *domaō, from earlier *domajō, from Proto-Indo-European *domh₂-éye-ti, thematic causative present of *demh₂- (“to domesticate, tame”). This same Proto-Indo-European term may be attested in Gothic 𐌲𐌰𐍄𐌰𐌼𐌾𐌰𐌽 (gatamjan) and Sanskrit दमयति (damáyati).\n* Sihler suggests that e-grade would be more usual for such a term and proposes a pre-form *demā-, which may have evolved into domō via the same phonological development found in *wemō > vomō. De Vaan, however, suggests that the term more likely derives from a causative due the presence of the ā-suffix combined with the lack of nasal infix or s-suffix.\n* Kroonen compares the term to Old High German zahmōn (“to tame”) and suggests that both derive from Proto-Indo-European *domh₂-eh₂yé-ti.\nCognate with Sanskrit दाम्यति (dā́myati), Ancient Greek δᾰμᾰ́ζω (dămắzō), Old High German zemmen and the Proto-Germanic adjective *tamaz.",
